What is Balsa Wood?
Balsa Wood (Ochroma pyramidale) is an exceptionally lightweight natural wood known for its low density, buoyancy, excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and ease of cutting, shaping, and machining. Its cellular structure contains a very high proportion of air, resulting in extremely low weight while maintaining useful stiffness and compressive strength relative to its mass.
Commercial balsa is commonly selected according to density, grain orientation, thickness, dimensions, and intended application. Density can vary substantially between grades, so the appropriate grade should be selected according to the required mechanical performance and end use. Commercial references commonly report approximately 80–240 kg/m³, although structural balsa products can cover different controlled density ranges depending on grade.
